‘Wine gladdens the heart of man’ (Psalm 104:15), according to one of the most beautiful psalms in the Bible.
‘It is a matter of producing the best possible wine from the site, of working out its special features. Vines have been cultivated and wine made on the Moselle since ancient times, and Riesling since 1465,’ says viticultural engineer Nick Köwerich. The winegrowing family has been listed in the books of the winegrowing village since 1548.
‘The Moselle makes it easy for us. For centuries, people have been trying out which grape variety produces the best results here. With Riesling, the Moselle became one of the world's style-defining white wine regions.
Young, plump and overflowing with flavours or sparse; very young or very ripe - a great diversity, produced by the 400 million-year-old blue Devonian slate. At 10, 20 or 30 years old, Rieslings become unique.
We like to pair Asian dishes or strong cheeses such as Stilton with young, richly flavoured Rieslings, and classic European dishes with mature Rieslings.
Tradition belongs in the bottle, not on it,’ says the winemaker. Some of Köwerich's wines have unusual names: „Für Feen und Elfen“ (For fairies and elves), „Für Träumer und Helden“ (For dreamers and heroes), „Fräulein Mosel (Miss Mosel) or „Herr Mosel“ (Mr Mosel) - wines with 7 to 12% alcohol by volume.
