The association Les Vins de Bandol is the Organisme de Défense et de Gestion which manages all the files relating to the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée BANDOL. In 1941, Bandol wines were recognised by the Institut National des Appellations d'Origines Contrôlées as one of the first AOCs in France. Situated between land and sea, the Bandol Wines territory is laid out in "restanques", dry stone walls supporting the terraced plots, in a natural amphitheatre stretching from the Sainte Baume to the Mediterranean shore. An exceptional site that generations of winegrowers have meticulously shaped. An appellation on a human scale of 1600 hectares where 65 estates, 3 cooperative cellars and 300 cooperators produce unique wines in very limited quantities (less than 40 hl/ha). Their know-how dedicated to a rare grape variety, Mourvèdre, invites the initiated to share the emotion of wines of character, original among all. The reds, a reference. Bandol is synonymous with reds! Aged in wood for a minimum of 18 months and obtained thanks to a subtle combination of Mourvèdre, Grenache for generosity and Cinsault for finesse, they improve with time. After 10, 20 or even 25 years, their powerful character gives the full measure of their richness and aromatic complexity. Rosés, the charm of conviviality Generous and refined, the Bandol rosés have a pale colour with a delicate salmon hue and subtly express the specificity of their terroir. Appreciated young for their freshness, they reveal a strong personality forged by the Mourvèdre grape, which makes them great rosés for gastronomy and ageing. This originality has earned them the honours of the finest tables. The whites, a rare refinement. Born from an alliance between Clairette, Bourboulenc and Ugni blanc, the Bandol whites are distinguished by a more confidential production that will delight the most demanding. Of great freshness, they offer nuanced flavours mixing white flowers, citrus fruits and fruity notes. Unforgettable
Château de Pibarnon is a small paradise in Provence, set among the highest slopes in the Bandol terroir. The Pibarnon terroir provides the ideal conditions for Mourvèdre, the appellation's king grape variety and the house's favourite child, to flourish. Eric de Saint Victor has been at the head of the estate since 2004, with an assertive style and uncompromising commitment to the highest quality.
Domaine de La Bégude has 38 hectares of vineyards at 410 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, the highest point of the Bandol appellation. The most northerly and westerly domain of the appellation, the vines are isolated and protected in the middle of a wilderness of 300 hectares of garrigue and woods, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. In this unique microclimate, due to the altitude and the influence of the sea, the vines flourish on a fresh terroir, unusual in the region, which gives the wines a unique style, full of aroma and freshness. Domaine de La Bégude counts more than 300 hectares of preserved nature, far from any non organic cultivation practice, where all weed killers, pesticides and chemical fertilizers are banned. The density of plantation is of 5,000 vines per hectare, on a patchwork of soils: ferruginous sandstone from the Coniacian with limestone cement, recent limestone scree & marl and limestone with rudists from the Turonian. Yields are deliberately controlled to favor the concentration of the wines and a homogeneous maturity of the grapes. They never exceed 30 hectoliters per hectare and can be much lower for certain vintages. Like a large stained-glass window illuminated by the Mediterranean sun, covering the ground with a mosaic of colors, Domaine de La Bégude brings together plots of land with multiple tones. Each vine scattered within the perfumed land reflects its own environment. Thyrsus (Certified Natural Wine), La Brulade, l'Irréductible... are all wines with endearing personality that draw their elegance and generosity from the terroir of La Bégude. All our wines are vegan and certified organic (Bio UE/NOP) and Demeter from the 2023 vintage.
Owned by Reynald Delille, son of the Domaine's founder, and Jean d'Arthuys, a media man and entrepreneur with a passion for wine, the Domaine is now considered one of the finest in the South of France. It tirelessly pursues its quest for excellence. With 35 hectares of vines planted on terraces facing the Mediterranean Sea and organically farmed, Domaine de Terrebrune produces wines whose identity and character are forged by this magical Trias terroir and Bandol's king grape variety, Mourvèdre. The strong personality of Terrebrune comes from the successful alchemy of several elements. A very strict Bandol AOC that pushes for the best; an exceptional terroir, the Trias massif, an outcrop of the sea bed 220 million years ago, characterized on the surface by limestone pebbles in a brown clay that inspired the Domaine's name; and a subsoil made of these famous fissured limestone rocks into which the vines plunge to assimilate their mineral trace elements. The estate's vineyards are organically cultivated to preserve the organic life of the soil and encourage natural grass cover. Every effort is made to respect the ecology of the vines and soils. In winter, sheep and goats act as natural weedkillers by grazing between the vines. Treatments are environmentally friendly: no insecticides or synthetic products.
Domaine la Suffrène is an estate rooted deep in history.
For centuries, the generations have succeeded one another with a single mission: extracting the best of this wonderful Provencal terroir, and passing on this treasure and their passion to their children.
Fast-forward to the present, and you find Cédric Gravier, born in the nearby city of Marseille in 1973. As a typical city dweller, and with no real attraction for this rather agricultural way of life, he used to come over to visit his grand-parents during week-ends and school holidays. Taking up his legacy didn’t cross his mind until his spent a year abroad just after high-school. This is when he realized the richness of his heritage, and the unique impact of French culture and way of life across the world. Further travels finished to anchor a certainty in his mind: he wanted to invest himself in his heritage, and continue the family history.
After studying wine-making and viticulture, Cedric took over the estate in 1996, then aged 23. The production, which until then had been sent to the local winemaking cooperative, got a new lease on life with the addition of a modern wine cellar.
20 years later, the estate now spreads on 50 hectares of vineyard and olive groves. As is common on the Bandol appellation, the vines grow on a number of varied plots, located for the most part around the medieval villages of Le Castellet and La Cadière d’Azur. With red wines as the flagship of La Suffrène, Mourvedre is the main varietal used. It grows, alongside vines of Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, Vermentino and Ugni Blanc, on an ancient bedrock of clay and limestone. The plots, facing south and the nearby Mediterranean Sea, enjoy over 3000 hours of sun per year. They are lined with “restanques”, these small dry-stone walls which are a feature of our landscape and our culture. The Mistral wind helps maintaining a perfectly healthy climate in the vineyard.
The Bandol appellation production specification are demanding: Mourvedre as the main varietal, a maximum yield of 40HL/Ha, mandatory hand-made harvest, reds made from vines at least 8 years old, and raised at least 18 month in big oak barrels (often over 50HL) called “foudres”... All this hard work pays, allowing us to produce high quality wines, with a great ageing potential. Our red wines have a powerful nose, are rich in black fruits and spices notes, with a complex mouthfeel, structure and balance. They stand out with their notes of black fruit which, with time, will develop on aromas of leather and undergrowth.
The roses are resolutely gastronomic. Fruity, intense, complex and aromatic, they can be enjoyed throughout the year and can be left to age in bottle to discover more complex tertiary aromas.
As for our white, expressive and elegant, it is a rare charmer, on notes of white flowers, citrus, and exotic fruits.
Cédric has always been mindful of the environment and the quality of his vineyard. For the past 15 years, cultural practices at La Suffrène have been similar to organic farming. In 2018, we started the process of official conversion, and our wines are certified organic since the vintage 2021. At the same time, we applied and obtained the HVE level 4 certification in 2019.
