At the heart of Haute Provence, along the mythical Durance river, not far from the famous Gorges du Verdon and the Luberon moutain range, since 1754, the winery of Château St Jean-lez-Durance extends on 38 hectares of vines registered under the Pierrevert designation and the Haute Provence PGI. This is where, for 8 generations, the d’Herbès family has been cultivating with passion Southern varieties vines, producing on the property fine and characterful wines.
Château St Jean is renowned for its wide range of wines and is rich in several terroirs, hillsides of calcareous clay and sandy-based soil as well as terraces of gravelly or silt soil.
Heirs to a dynasty devoted to the estate and its unique terroir, Jean Guillaume d’Herbès and his wife Constance have both left Paris and their careers - he was working in a large industrial group and she was working in Haute Couture, for the House of John Galliano – to take over the wine business in 2013.
Their aim is to offer fine and elegant wines glorifying this unique terroir of Provence, under the designation of Pierrevert, also known as “the Haute Provence gem”, one of the highest in altitude and benefiting from remarkable temperature variations.
Entrusted with a rare historical heritage, Jean Guillaume and Constance take particular care to preserve fruits of their ancestors’ labour. They have thus decided to grow vines organically (certified in 2016) and within a bioactive approach (use of compost, vines planted with winter cover crops, in accordance with the moon phases).
Built in 2018, the gravity-flow wine cellar is the link between a strong historical integration and a modern vision of the vinification. My grandfather lands have been reworked in order to drive them in organic and biodynamic viticulture, to propose vibrant and strong personnality driven wines. Today, we cultivate 15 ha of vines : Malbec mostly but also Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah and Ségalin.
From the 3rg clayey level of the Lot river valley to the limestone plateaux of the Causse via bank grave hill, our Malbec grapes can epress them through various soils, altitudes and expositions. It allows us to propose you a large range of 10 various wine, from sparkling to white and red with different levels of extraction. We produce around 50 000 bottles a year.
The vinification process is made naturally (indigenous yeast) with the minimum input possible (sulfites are added if needed), gravity-flow to preserve th matter. The care given to the wines to their maturity is made through steel or concrete tanks, wood barrels or vat following their personnality.
