Bononia Estate traces its roots back to 1895, when Victor Olinger founded one of Bulgaria’s oldest breweries in Koshava, later transformed into a winery on the banks of the Danube near Vidin. Revived in 2019 by a passionate Bulgarian family, the estate combines historic heritage with modern winemaking technology. Its 160 hectares of vineyards lie in the fertile Danube terroir of the Vidin region, characterized by chernozem soils, mild westerly winds, and a temperate continental climate, ideal for both international and indigenous varieties such as Gamza, Dimyat and Vrachanski Misket. The winery produces up to 300 tons of white, red, rosé, and sparkling wines annually, using state-of-the-art equipment. Complementing the winery, Bononia Estate Winery & Resort offers a boutique hospitality experience with elegant rooms, fine dining, wine tastings, and exclusive activities along the Danube.
BRATANOV is a family-run winery founded in 2010 by a father and his two sons. The estate owns 44 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of the Sakar Mountain in south-eastern Bulgaria, close to the Greek–Turkish borderand the passing Maritsa river. This mystic region is renowned for its exceptional potential for red wines, while also offering excellent conditions for selected whites.
The winery works with both local Bulgarian varieties (Mavrud, Rubin, Gamza, Tamianka) and international classicssuch as Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Viognier.
The vineyards are farmed sustainably using dry-farming, no-till practices and cover crops, and have been certified organic since 2024. The winery itself is organically certified from 2025, with the first organic releases coming from that vintage.
Together with French-educated oenologist Maria Stoeva, the Bratanov family focuses on deep understanding of the local terroir and minimal intervention approach. Since 2016, all wines have been fermented exclusively with the wild, native yeasts, resulting in wines with a strong sense of place that express the distinctive “characTerroir”of Sakar.
