BEST'S WINES
Best's Wines Great Western is one of Australia's "best kept" winery secrets. Foumded in 1866, we are a family owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling are our specialities, but we also produce small parcel wines.
d'Arenberg Wines
One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale, d’Arenberg was established in 1912 when Joseph Osborn, a teetotaler and director of Thomas Hardy and Sons, sold his stable of prize winning horses to purchase the property. Each generation of the Osborn family has passed on knowledge to the next custodian of the soil, and today fourth generation family member Chester (Head Winemaker), makes distinctive wines using traditional methods both in the vineyard and the winery.
The personality of each vineyard is encouraged to flourish with minimal intervention: no fertiliser, minimal or no irrigation, no soil cultivation and no herbicide. The winery itself is a working tribute to traditional winemaking. Built in 1927, the original concrete open fermenters are still in operation, and from entry level to iconic, all wines are basket pressed with red ferments foot trod by wader clad cellar hands.
Known for an eclectic portfolio of oddly named wines and a bold red stripe that adorns each bottle, the range is considerable with over 70 wines and 30 grape varieties with styles that include white, red, fortified, sparkling and dessert. Over one thousand show medals and praise from wine scribes all over the world attest to their merits.
In 2017, construction was completed on the d’Arenberg Cube, a five storey multi-function building set among Mourvèdre vines. The Cube includes a new tasting room, restaurant, private tasting areas and state of the art facilities on each level.
De Bortoli Wines
The De Bortoli family story is one of determination and triumph that started 90 years ago in war-torn Europe and is now told, generations later, across Australia.
De Bortoli’s heritage encompasses the universal story of immigrants making good in an adopted land, the rise and rise of the Australian wine industry and the tale of a hardworking and innovative family who considers good wine, good food and good friends to be among the true pleasures in life.
Esilio Wines
Esilio Wines is a family-owned and operated winery that produces single-vineyard, estate-grown wines with a strong focus on quality, value and authenticity. While we’re still a relatively young brand, we’ve had a very strong start — Our wines have received 90+ point scores from Halliday, Wine Orbit and Wine Pilot , and our Rosé and Sparkling wines are quickly becoming brand champions with our Rosé picking up the GOLD medal at the Australian Small Winemakers Show.
Esilio Wines operates on 130 hectares and is a fully operating winery in the Mount Lofty Ranges. This elevated and exposed landscape offers a distinctive climate that produces wines of freshness, structure and purity, while still maintaining the generosity and character that South Australia is famous for.
What stands out about Esilio is that it combines serious winemaking credentials with a fresh, contemporary identity . The wines are vibrant, VERY well-priced and packaged with a clear modern aesthetic — exactly the kind of brand that resonates strongly with today’s retail and on-premise markets.
Metala Wines
The family planted their first Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1891. This makes the Cabernet Sauvignon the oldest family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the world and the Shiraz the oldest in the Langhorne Creek region.
The original plantings by current owner Guy Adams’ great-great grandfather led to the estate known as the Metala Vineyards, recognised as one of the most famous in South Australia. The business has evolved from five generations of grape growing tradition and, at 220 Ha, is the largest family owned vineyard in the region.
Langhorne Creek is the largest premium cool climate grape growing region in Australia and for years has been one of the wine industry’s best kept secrets. All wines are entirely estate grown and made.
The wine styles are focused on structure, texture and balance. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the main varietals as well as Malbec and Chardonnay.
With over 20 years Export experience the wines are now in India, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia, USA, Netherlands, UK, Italy, New Zealand and Canada. In fact more than 80% of sales are Export. An experienced team can assist in all aspects of compliance and shipping.
Each parcel of grapes is fermented in small batches to ensure the potential from every aspect of the vineyard is maximised. Depending on the batch, we can vary the yeasts, fermentation temperatures, skin plunging regimes, and the total time spent on skins.
Again, patience and time is the essence, to allow for slow and complete extraction of colour and flavour.
The restraint taken ensures firm but not bitter tannins, and the very old vines maintain a wonderful natural acidity to provide structure and backbone. Metala Wines work on an aged release program, ensuring our wines are food ready before release, which gives us a great advantage in the on trade.
