Co-exhibitor of Douro and Port Wines | IVDP
Titan of Douro is a name inspired by the family's loyal friend, a Dogo Argentino, a dog with a tenderness and courage as great as his heart!
From the beginning, the work has always focused on finding old vines in the most genuine and least explored places in the Douro, where there are new stories to tell in the form of wine. It was at the foot of the Serra do Reboredo (1,000 meters altitude), in Paredes da Beira, at the highest point in the Douro, that it all began. Surrounded by abundant granite outcrops, the area has sandy granite soils interspersed with quartz veins, an altitude between 700 and 1,000 meters, is located on the slopes of the Távora River and possesses an enviable heritage of centuries-old vines, untouched over time and maintained by the calloused hands of generations of hard work. From here come wines of great freshness, character and identity!
The goal will always be to maximize the best that the vineyard offers, respecting its history, tradition, and the essence of its people.
The Távora Valley impresses with the rugged and wild beauty of its granite slopes and the diverse species of birds that inhabit this winding and enclosed valley, especially birds of prey and forest passerines.
Paredes da Beira was conquered from the Moors by D. Tedon and D. Rauzendo, Christian knights, descendants of the King of León.
The Christians knew that it was customary for the Moors to bathe in the river on the morning of Saint John's Day, and they took advantage of this opportunity to attack the main castle, which was without reinforcements. D. Rauzendo came with his warriors and the capture of the castle was easy (...) then he ran to the aid of his brother who was almost losing the battle near the Távora River. Such was the ferocity and bravery of the two brothers and the remaining Christians against the Moors, killing more than a thousand, that even the waters of the river turned red; even today that place is known as the Valley of the Thousand! (in “Speaking Stones – Walls of Beira”, Ricardo Costa).
In the Vale dos Mil, we find the century-old vineyards of the Titan of Douro. Covering approximately six hectares, they are divided into 8 plots: Monte, Barreiro, Gaiteiro, Vale da Mãe, Outeiro Alto, Ribeira, São Paio, and Castelo Velho.
In a prime location, it forms part of a fantastic mosaic of great natural beauty on the slopes of the Távora River.
Vineyards planted over a hundred years ago, with a blend of various red and white grape varieties, grown on their own rootstock, at altitudes of 750-850 meters, facing southeast and with soil of granite, quartz, and rolled pebbles, give rise to properties that translate into the production of iconic and unique wines in the Douro Demarcated Region. Vineyard management focuses on viticulture that balances the ecosystem, avoiding chemical products and any type of mechanization, ensuring the sustainability of the terroir and the surrounding biodiversity.
