Schloss Johannisberg is the name of both the winery and the vineyard that belongs to it. The grapes for the wines come from a single, 50-hectare monopole vineyard that surrounds Johannisberg in a semicircle.
Schloss Johannisberg was founded as a Benedictine monastery around 1100, and the monks began cultivating wine. In 1720, Johannisberg became the property of the Prince-Abbot of Fulda, who converted the entire vineyard to Riesling. This makes Schloss Johannisberg the world's first Riesling winery.
The grapes grow on south-facing slopes characterized by Taunus quartzite, which are interspersed with fertile loam and iron dioxide. Schloss Johannisberg now produces 10 quality levels ranging from dry to noble sweet. The wines are aged in the historic wooden barrel cellar, and selected treasures mature in the “Bibliotheca Subterranea” for many decades. The so-called “sealing colours” characterize the different wines and date back to an in-house quality system from the 19th century.
