The Sainte-Marie des Crozes estate, situated in the terroir of the Alaric Mountain (the northernmost terroir of Corbières), is composed of several grapes varieties planted on soils mainly composed of limestone and chalk surrounding by the garrigue who brings to his wines scents of thyme and hawthorn, producing very colourful wines with a delicate bouquet and aging abilility. In the ALIAS family, winemaking has been passed down from generation to generation. Arthur, Hector and Hervé Alias, born and bred on this land, devoted themselves to wine production, as was the custom in the Languedoc region. Winemaking was a practice that was inherited and unquestioned but they made their living elsewhere. In 1997, Bernard ALIAS, the current owner, inherited the estate in Douzens. In a period of economic crisis for local winemakers, he was determined to overcome the obstacles ahead of him and join the ranks of the best vintners in the area. He wanted to prove himself worthy of this land that he had inherited in the shadow of the Alaric Mountain. The road was long. He sought technical advice before replanting and restructuring the vineyard. In 13 years, 50 acres were replanted to improve the quality of the grapes (vineyard spacing 2500 vines/acre). The estate now offers wide range grape varieties: syrah, Grenache noir, carignan, mourvèdre, cinsault, roussanne, Grenache blanc in AOC Corbières and Pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon et franc in IGP OC. At the same time, all the production equipment has been modernized. The latest investment was the construction of an ageing cellar and tasting room in a stone winery in the heart of the village. Bernard ALIAS had an ultimate preoccupation: preserv the environment that he would let to his children, So he has decided to cultivate his earth in respect of the flora and fauna in Organic agriculture and then his daughter did another step going to the biodynamic agriculture, all the vines are labellised by demeter since 2020.
