About

Primum Familiae Vini (PFV) unites twelve of Europe’s leading wine producers with the aim of sustaining their long heritage, conserving the spirit of family and continuing the pursuit of excellence. In 1992 this plan came to fruition and Primum Familiae Vini was established. The PFV is an invitation-only association of family-owned companies which transcends geographical borders while maintaining a common link of great vineyard ownership and excellent winemaking. PFV has grown to include a dozen families: Marchesi Antinori (Tuscany), Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Bordeaux), Joseph Drouhin (Burgundy), Domaine Clarence Dillon (Bordeaux), Egon Müller Scharzhof (Mosel), Famille Hugel (Alsace), Pol Roger (Champagne), Famille Perrin (Rhône Valley), Symington Family Estates (Portugal), Tenuta San Guido (Tuscany), Familia Torres (Spain) and Vega Sicilia (Ribera del Duero). Today, PFV members continue to exchange experiences on all aspects of the wine world and their mission is to represent the highest level of excellence; to be synonymous with both exquisite quality and sustainability; to blend family heritage and innovation; and to be aspirational through their vision, elegance and passion

SYMINGTON FAMILY ESTATES VINHOS S.A.

Portugal
7.3 | P 205

EN

The Symingtons of Scottish, English and Portuguese descent have been port producers in northern Portugal since 1882. For five generations they have combined their passion for producing fine wines and ports with a deep commitment to the region’s land and people.

Today, nine Symingtons work across their four port houses: Graham’s, Cockburn’s, Dow’s and Warre’s, as well as their Douro wine brands – Quinta do Vesúvio, Quinta do Ataíde, Altano, Prats & Symington (of Chryseia fame), and Vértice (one of Portugal’s leading sparkling wines). They also produce wine at Quinta da Fonte Souto in the Alto Alentejo, Casa de Rodas in Monção & Melgaço, and own 50% one of the leading English sparkling wine producers, Hambledon.

Symington Family Estates is the world’s leading premium port producer and farms the largest area of prime (‘A’ rated) vineyard in the Douro valley, with 25 quintas (estates) covering more than 2,500 hectares and more than 1,000 ha of vineyard. The family business is a founding member of Primum Familiae Vini – an association of 12 European wine families – and in 2020 was voted in 7th place in The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands list by a panel of over 200 international wine experts organised by Drinks International.

All Symington vineyards are sustainably managed under a minimum intervention certification and 110 ha are organically farmed – the largest area of organic vineyard in northern Portugal. The family have invested significantly in viticulture R&D to adapt to climate change and have an ambitious sustainability plan, with a series of public goals under the banner of Mission 2025.

The company is a certified B Corporation – the first wine company in Portugal to take this step – joining a global community of businesses audited for the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility. In 2024, the company was re-certified with an improved score of 89 points. Symington was named Green Company of the Year in The Drinks Business 2024 Green Awards for Adega do Ataíde, and, in 2023, Symington Family Estates became the first wine producer in Portugal to achieve the new Sustainable Winegrowing Certification, following a rigorous audit.

FR

TEMPOS VEGA SICILIA

Spain
7.3 | P 205

Tempos Vega Sicilia was set up in 1982 by the Álvarez family, its current owner, when it purchased the legendary winery of the Ribera del Duero. The other companies would be added down through the years.

The Álvarez family's business project is based on two fundamental cornerstones: consistency of the quality of the product as a guarantee for the different vintages, and dedication to the client as a benchmark in its routine activity.

Both cornerstones have underpinned the development of the group and have enabled very solid growth both in terms of the production structure and of the distribution and positioning of the different wines. The group currently consists of 5 companies (Bodegas Vega Sicilia S.A, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión S.A., Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia S.A., Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia S.A. and Tokaj-Oremus Kft.), the first four in Spain and the fifth in Hungary.

TENUTA SAN GUIDO

Italy
7.3 | P 205

Tenuta San Guido is an estate consisting of about 2,500 hectares nearby the village of Bolgheri, on the

Tuscan coast. Here, the balance between people and nature has developed a unique ecosystem, known

nowadays worldwide for its excellences: the wines, the Razza Dormello Olgiata thoroughbred horses

stud and the private nature reserve, Rifugio Faunistico Padule di Bolgheri.

WEINGUT EGON MULLER SCHARZHOF

Germany
7.3 | P 205

Jean-Jacques Koch, Egon Müller's great great-grandfather acquired the Scharzhof estate from the "République Française" in 1797 after the French Revolution and the occupation of the West Bank of the Rhine River by the revolutionary government. The Scharzhofberg vineyard was likely planted by the Romans and belonged to the Monastery "St Marien ad Martyres” in Trier from its founding around 700 A. D. through the Middle Ages.

Egon Müller's vineyards are exposed to a northerly climate. Consequently, much depends on the vintage and on late harvesting. Regarding the winemaking process, however, Egon Müller's family's philosophy is based on the belief that the best wines are the ones that "make themselves”.

The Egon Müller-Scharzhof family lives in its own vineyards and oversees the day-to-day operation at the estate.

All of the family's wines are Rieslings. "Scharzhof” is their most basic wine. Qualitätswein by German legal standard, it is made of the grapes from their vineyards in Saarburg, Kanzem and Wawern and from the Wiltinger Braunfels and Wiltinger Kupp vineyards. Only the "Prädikat" wines from the Scharzhofberg and from Wiltinger braune Kupp carry vineyard designations. The Kabinett wines, made from ripe grapes with low alcoholic content constitute the backbone of the production. Spätlese is made from overripe grapes while Auslese and higher qualities are made from grapes attained by noble rot.
