Mirabella traces its origin back to an encounter in 1979 between Teresio Schiavi, a winemaker originally from Pavia, and Franciacorta-area engineer Giacomo Cavalli. Lying in Rodengo Saiano, in the easternmost part of Franciacorta, protected by the nearby Parco delle Colline nature preserve, Mirabella is named after the first estate vineyard, planted in 1981 and still in production. The winery is situated in an ex-wine cooperative complex dating back to 1942, with underground ageing cellars and concrete vats that constitute a true monument to the art of wine. Teresio Schiavi directed Mirabella over the decades in a pioneering spirit and with respectful attention to the winemaking process and to the environment, ably assisted by Francesco Bracchi and his sons Alessandro and Alberto. Motivated by his vision for the future destiny of the growing area, he was one of the original founders of the Consorzio Franciacorta, and he brought to the winery sustainable viticulture of its 45 hectares of vineyards. His innovative spirit so permeated the entire winery production team that Mirabella was able to produce the very first Franciacorta with no added sulphites and the growing area’s first monovarietal Pinot Blanc.
