In the heart of Montalcino, among the hills bathed in the golden light of the Val d’Orcia, Fattoria La Gerla stands as a symbol of elegance and the true spirit of Sangiovese. Once part of the historic Biondi-Santi family estate, pioneers of Brunello, the property began a new chapter in 1976, when Sergio Rossi—captivated by the land—set out to revive it. He replanted the vineyards, renewed the cellar, and chose the name “La Gerla,” inspired by the traditional grape-harvest basket, a symbol of humility and respect for the land.
Rossi aimed to blend Tuscan tradition with modern winemaking, drawing on two distinct terroirs: the cooler northern area of Canalicchio and the warmer southern zone of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Their combination gives rise to wines of balance, freshness, and depth.
Under Rossi’s leadership, and later guided by agronomist Alberto Passeri and enologist Vittorio Fiore, La Gerla has become one of Montalcino’s most respected estates. Today, its Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino, and Poggio gli Angeli wines are celebrated worldwide for their finesse and authenticity.
In essence, La Gerla is a story of revival, tradition, and passion—a place where each harvest renews the profound bond between people and the land.
Fattoria La Gerla distinguishes itself through a rare balance of tradition, precision, and soul.
While many Montalcino estates pursue either power or refinement, La Gerla masterfully blends both—crafting wines that are elegant yet deeply expressive of their terroir.
La Gerla owns vineyards in two of Montalcino’s most distinctive zones: Canalicchio, in the cooler northeast, and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the warmer south. By blending grapes from these contrasting areas, the winery achieves a signature harmony: the finesse and freshness of the north combined with the depth and warmth of the south. Few producers manage to balance these terroirs so seamlessly.
From founder Sergio Rossi’s original vision to today’s team, La Gerla has always placed the human connection to the land at the core of its identity. The name itself—“La Gerla,” the traditional basket carried by harvesters—symbolizes humility, craftsmanship, and respect for manual labor.
La Gerla’s wines are celebrated for their purity, balance, and reliability across vintages. Rather than following trends or chasing excessive concentration, the estate remains faithful to a classical Brunello style—structured yet approachable, powerful yet graceful.
Working on an artisanal scale (around 11 hectares), La Gerla combines hands-on vineyard care with advanced cellar technology. This allows meticulous control over every step of production while preserving the authenticity of traditional methods.
Since Rossi’s passing in 2011, the estate has upheld his philosophy under the stewardship of Donatella Monforte, Alberto Passeri, and Vittorio Fiore, ensuring continuity of style and spirit. This blend of passion, tradition, and technical expertise keeps La Gerla among the most respected names in Montalcino.
