Main exhibitor
The Enclos des Anges produces its organic grapes and wines in Calvi, a costal town in Corsica, a french island set off the west coast of Tuscany. Grown on the estate’s 18 hectares are both local endemic Coriscan varieties (Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu, Vermentinu) and typical mediterranean grapes . Red, rosé and white wines are produced.
The domain, in the heart of the AOP Calvi, was created in 2007 by Richard Spurr, an anglo-irish winemaker, used to harsh climates and his wife, Marjorie, an enology teacher from Montpellier, passionate about wine.
The low yielding vines are grown using the tradional gobelet system, situated between the sea and the mountain range, on windswept hills. The mediterranean climate enables the grapes to grow healthily and spraying is reduced to its minimum. Ploughing and interrow tilling is done at night to preserve soil moisture during the summer period.
The hand picked harvest starts early September and spans out over the month as the different grape varieties slowly ripen. The grapes are brought into the cellar in the middle of the vineyard, where the wines are made, aged and then bottled on site. The bottled wines are stocked in an underground cellar.
There are two ranges of wine both undergoing organic certification.
Sesto : Meaning « sixth » in Corsican, ;a delicat blend of up to six grape varieties, using Richard’s knowhow and experience, marrying Corsican originality (Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu, Vermentinu) to the mediterranean classics (Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah).
Fraticello : literally « little brother », the Fraticello range is an expression of the island’s endemic grapes, Sciacarellu, Niellucciu and Vermentinu, vibrant and fruity, they express the aromas of Corsica and its’ surrounding nature.
An annual production of around 3,500 cases is sold both locally and abroad (Europe, North America , Japan and Australia ). These niche wines distinguish themselves by their originality and recognised quality .
