Co-exhibitor of Femmes Vignes Rhône
In the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail,in the small village of Suzette, near Gigondas, Domaine Saint Amant is the highest domaine in the Rhone Valley and enjoys a unique terroir: 35 acres of small plots of steep slopes, between 1200’ and 1800’, facing south-east and swept by the mistral, with a soil of Triassic marl and limestone. The high altitude contributes to the health of the vines: airy and dry soils, no propagation of diseases, no early spring frost, a late harvest (up to 3 weeks later than in the plain), and allows for slow maturation which provides fruit, finesse, freshness, and a unique balance to its Southern wines.
Domaine Saint Amant is now run by Camille Nosworthy and her daughter Eloise. Next to the red grapes of Grenache and Syrah, we chose to plant white Viognier, a grape that suits perfectly the altitude and benefit from the cool temperature.
We cultivate our vines with the greatest respect for the very biodiverse environment : no herbicides, no pesticides. The vines are planted, pruned, tied up and harvested by hand. The vats are gravity fed, yeasts are indigenous, temperatures are controlled during the fermentations. Vinification and ageing are long and natural, they take place in small containers : stainless steel and French oak wood. The modern winery built in 1995 is underground and air-conditioned. Today, we produce 55.000 bottles a year.
