The history of Clos la Coutale began in 1850 with 7 hectares of vines, completely decimated 20 years later by phylloxera which ravaged the entire Cahors vineyard. It was not until 1890 that the estate was reborn. A will and know-how rewarded by a first medal at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris in 1895. Still located in the meanders of the Lot valley, in the town of Vire, the Clos La Coutale vineyard, spreads over alluvial terraces and limestone scree, particularly suitable for growing vines. The 90 hectares of the estate are planted with 85% Côt or Malbec (locally called Auxerrois). It is the Cahors grape variety, with its round grain, its thick skin, rich in coloring matter and tannin, which gives character to this wine for aging. 14% Merlot rounds out the hardness of its youth and refines its bouquet. Finally, Tannat, a native grape variety from the South-West, occupies 1% of the surface area. Today, Philippe Bernède, who has inherited the know-how of six generations of winegrowers, has led and managed Clos La Coutale for more than 40 years, between tradition and modernity. Since 2020, his son Sébastien has worked with him on the estate. In order to share their passion, their wine and their attachment to the terroirs of the South-West, export has become their main market. Finally, since 2022, Clos La Coutale has been certified in Organic Agriculture.
