A Karst dream, shaped by wind, stone, and perseverance There are places you don’t choose — they choose you. In the 1980s, Magda and Slavko Skerlj heard the call of the Karst and settled in Sgonico, among dry-stone walls and windswept silence. Back then, farming meant endurance, and endurance meant belief. But their vision was clear: to live from the land, respectfully, restoring its value and telling its story with honesty. That’s how Bajta – Fattoria Carsica was born: not just a home, but a living place where every action has meaning and every season leaves a trace. At the beginning there were only hands, a few vines, and a handful of animals. Slowly, everything took shape: the vineyard became a project, the livestock a daily commitment, and the agriturismo kitchen a way to share who we are. The old cellars were dug out of the rock, patiently and with effort. The cured meats age among noble molds that have long inhabited those stones. The vines learned to thrive in thin soil and fierce winds, forming strong, resilient plants. Over time, their children Nevo and Andrej took the reins. They didn’t change the path — they made it longer: adding passion, research, and innovation. A line of Karst sparkling wines was born, wines refined by time, collaborations with universities, and low-impact techniques. Still today, everything begins the same way: with the sound of a tractor among the rows, the scent of hay, and a table simply set. Bajta is still that walking dream: a small frontier farm that chose to stay true to itself and to its land
