COMPANY SHORT STORY
Our family has been working in viniculture and wine growing for several generations. We currently explore over 170 hectares divided in two properties in central Portugal: Quinta de S. Mateus and Quinta de Vale d’ Azar.
Situated on Quinta de S. Mateus, our wine cellar produces 300.000 bottles a year. The wine is produced without any pumps at all (there’s a 18m height difference between the entrance of the grapes and the presses), it’s only used the robot pigeuer, without remontage, without using any yeasts, enzymes or bacteria.
We seek Bairrada DOC Certification for all our wines, so that we can proudly carry the name of our land, far and wide.
ABOUT WINE
We produce what people call this days “natural wines”: we don’t use any enological products, the new cellar uses gravity rather them pumps and in the field we go part organic and part integrated production. Bairrada, the soil and climate, shows very well in our wines, but we think that we can always improve.
On these vineyards we rehearse some foreign varieties along with several national ones (some of them from outside this region) such as: Baga, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, etc.. As white varieties, we grow, Arinto, Bical, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, etc.
We produce wines of a single vineyard (the most part), with a first wine with high quality and cost and a second one with a major number of bottles and low cost. We also produce sparkling wines with the classic method.

Luís Pato inherited from his father, João Pato, not only a deep knowledge of the vineyard, but also an uncompromising and pioneering spirit. In 1980, he released his first wine: a single-varietal Baga of remarkable quality and extremely limited production — a wine that is still sought after today as a true treasure by collectors and wine lovers around the world.
He was also among the first Portuguese producers to take his wines beyond national borders. More than forty years ago, he set off with a suitcase filled with bottles of Baga, Bical and other indigenous grape varieties from Bairrada, surprising sommeliers, importers and wine enthusiasts who immediately recognized something truly distinctive in those wines.
Luís Pato’s wines revealed the true essence of the region:
• Freshness, shaped by Atlantic influence.
• Fruit character, born from clay-limestone hillside soils.
• Elegance and longevity, the result of balanced fermentations and precisely managed ageing in oak.
Luís Pato was a solitary rebel, sparking a revolution in a region that, at the time, had yet to recognize its own potential. Where others saw immovable tradition, he saw the future.
Quatro Cravos, Wines and Wineries is a Portuguese wine and sparkling wine producer;
In the Bairrada wine producing region, renowned for the excellence of its sparkling wines, the Quatro Cravos company runs Adega Cravo, Adega Original and Positivewine that produce DOC Bairrada and IGP Beira Atlântico wines.
The still and the sparkling wines we produce shall certainly surprise with the qualities resulting from a combination of a legacy rich in traditional methods alongside cutting-edge technologies.
Throughout over one-hundred years, handed down from generation to generation, the family retained the tradition of producing wines. This family knowledge and heritage, and all the experience of wine have lasted down to the present.
The merger with the PositiveWine company and the construction of Adega Original enabled Quatro Cravos to gain in dimension with its scope of activities now spanning vines and wines, enotourism and the hire of event facilities.
The acquisition of terrain for the planting of new wines served to offset the production limitations of the centenary Adega Cravo, which boosted the output and the consistency of these high quality still and sparkling wines.
Adega Original evokes the idea of something new, pure, authentic, modern and truly Bairrada in character. The identity of this estate focuses on the concept of the word origin, which means the beginning, the root of that which exists, the point of departure.

That's how the population of Fogueira named the project I created in 1989. Fausto was my paternal grandfather, whose vineyards I collected with others from my maternal grandfather to establish the first wine company in Bairrada in over 20 years. With the paramount support of my father Abel, 12 hectares of vineyard that until then produced wine sold in bulk were transformed into wines bottled with our brand. Another 16 hectares were later added to the original vineyard area, always in the best Bairrada terroir.
My belief was a simple one: I wanted the production of our wines to be accomplished through traditional methods, without ignoring the constant developments observed in the fields of viticulture and oenology. That is why, for example, all our grapes are handpicked, our red wines are produced in lagares without added yeasts and why our sparkling wines have no residual sugar. I believe quality means nothing without identity.
Therefore, we respect wine as it respects us and we always devote ourselves to it as a family, with a passion that has lasted for three generations.
Overview
Wines that are sons of history. A family that is the daughter of wine. Generations perpetuate a taste, a flavour, a moment. Generations of pride, love, work, celebrate the grape, the nectar, the colour. A mark of old times allied to the present moment. The symbol of a passion transformed by the history of time and people. Wines that taste like life. Wines to be felt.
Bairrada D.O.C. & Aleixo Wines
A terroir that produces wines full of vitality and history. Bairrada is a privileged stage where winemaking emerges, reemerges, and merges throughout thousands of years, mirroring the transformation that took place in Portugal. The Aleixo Wines sum up the same vitality, indentity and natural potential. Few however can penetrate their secrets and enjoy all of its enchantment.
History
In 1951, the Aleixo Family began producing and selling wine in bulk. Sales performed well and demand was good, so bottling became part of the production process. This led to the creation of the family's first brand in 1960: Aleixo.
Business developed in the following decade, the second generation assumed control, and by 1971 new facilities were built as part of an expansion plan. This action improved not only quantity but also quality, and by 1975 production capacity had increase by 50% and several quality awards were granted.
The third generation of the Aleixo family joins the business in 1996 and a new modern winery is built. The business model evolved during the following decade and its expansion boomed in 2011, after a strong investement in research and development which set exportation as a top priority. In 2015 the 40th international market is achieved.
Complementing this expansion, the company started to exhibit the Aleixo Wines worldwide, and by 2019 achieving presence in all major international wine and food fairs.
