Dalila and Emanuela Gianfreda, sisters and owners of Antica MasseriaJorche, represent nowadays the 5th generation of a family producing wine, mostly Primitivo, since the beginning of the last century in the '20s.
Their grand grandfather Giovanni owned one of the first palamientu (the ancient form of winery) in Torricella, a small village in the South of Puglia, right in the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria area. The story continued with their grandfather Cosimo, who was the first one to build a modern kind of winery, then with their father Antonio, who was the first in the family to study as an enologist and run the business reorganizing it and bringing new technical competences.
They grew in close contact with their grandparents and their childhood memories still have the taste of the grapes during the harvest and the smell of the must in the winery during the fermentation. Therefore, since childhood Dalila and Emanuela developed an intimate relationship with the Apulian territory, the wine culture and the traditions of their region, a place rich in history and fascination.
Both of them studied far from home (Dalila graduated in General Management and Marketing at the Bocconi University in Milan while Emanuela graduated in Enology and Viticulture at the University in Trento and she worked in different wineries in the North of Italy, France and Australia), then they came back home to give their contribution to the growing and improving of the family business.
Since 2009, the two sisters proudly started to lead together the Jorche winery, a company completely managed by women: Dalila takes care of the marketing and communication aspects with a particular interest to the international markets, and also supervises the organization of the Masseria close to the Winery, in which there is the hospitality of Italian and foreign guests who search for traditional cuisine, relax and contact with nature. Emanuela takes care of the conduction of the vineyards and of the vinification and the bottling processes.
The actual new winery was built 10 years ago in the middle of the vineyards, rising from the soil like a part of it: a modern building with a high technology level, surrounded by 6 hectares of vineyards, which mirrors the perfect balance between territory, family history, young women management and modern lifestyle.
Jorche also owns 35 hectares of old vineyards for a total of 40 hectares in property.
The cultivated grape varieties are all chosen among the Apulian indigenous ones (Primitivo and Negroamaro for the reds, Fiano Minutolo and Bianco d'Alessano for the whites).
Salento, the lower part of Puglia where Manduria area is located, is a zone characterized by very favorable natural and weather conditions for the cultivation of high quality grapes: a very warm and sunny weather, few rains, red soil rich in iron and sandstone and a great influence of the breeze coming from the very close Jonian sea.
Jorche follows and controls in details every aspect of the entire supply chain: the cultivation of grapes, the completely manual harvest, the vinification, the wine aging in barrels, barriques and capasuni (ancient type of Apulian amphora) and the final bottling and labeling.
In their wines, the two sisters are committed to enhance the territoriality and tradition, but at the same time to seek a personal and younger style which joins elegance and balance with the purest characteristics of the indigenous grapes.
Nowadays, Dalila and Emanuela distribute their wine all over the world, with the 70% of their production that reaches 25 countries, with the aim of making the precious territory of Apulia known worldwide through their daily effort, passion and commitment.
