The family planted their first Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1891. This makes the Cabernet Sauvignon the oldest family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the world and the Shiraz the oldest in the Langhorne Creek region.
The original plantings by current owner Guy Adams’ great-great grandfather led to the estate known as the Metala Vineyards, recognised as one of the most famous in South Australia. The business has evolved from five generations of grape growing tradition and, at 220 Ha, is the largest family owned vineyard in the region.
Langhorne Creek is the largest premium cool climate grape growing region in Australia and for years has been one of the wine industry’s best kept secrets. All wines are entirely estate grown and made.
The wine styles are focused on structure, texture and balance. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the main varietals as well as Malbec and Chardonnay.

Each parcel of grapes is fermented in small batches to ensure the potential from every aspect of the vineyard is maximised. Depending on the batch, we can vary the yeasts, fermentation temperatures, skin plunging regimes, and the total time spent on skins.
Again, patience and time is the essence, to allow for slow and complete extraction of colour and flavour.
The restraint taken ensures firm but not bitter tannins, and the very old vines maintain a wonderful natural acidity to provide structure and backbone. Metala Wines work on an aged release program, ensuring our wines are food ready before release, which gives us a great advantage in the on trade.

Winegrapes Australia was established in 1992, when a small group of McLaren Vale growers came together over a shared passion for wine. Decades on, our principle remains: to offer support through a vast network to leave our growers free to practice their art, while leaving the art of winemaking and selling to us.
The group includes more than 100 growers across 12 regions, 2,000 hectares of vineyard and 900 individual blocks of fruit – including certified organic, biodynamic and sustainably grown winegrapes.
What started as a business of selling grapes some 30+ years ago has evolved into one that offers a diverse range of wine supply options from bottle ready wines direct to you for packaging, or, customised wine production producing finished bottled products made to your specification.
We are here to simplify your business. Working in partnership with you, we are a dedicated team of growers and winemakers, creating options and delivering solutions.
From us, to you.
