1979WINES is a Greek wine company dedicated to the study and contemporary expression of retsina. Honouring the milestone of the establishment of Retsina as an Appellation by Tradition in 1979, the company and its wines were born within the framework of scientific research, exploring every parameter that shapes retsina’s identity — from raw materials to its history and culture.

Working with Assyrtiko from a single privately owned vineyard in Goumenissa, 1979WINES introduced an innovation in retsina production: the use of sustainably harvested pine resin, collected without chemical treatments, revealing new aromatic depth and a distinctive character. Each vintage forms part of an ongoing research process, where every discovery leads to new questions.

The wines have been distinguished at Great Greek Wines 2025 and have received outstanding scores of 18.5/20 from Julia Harding MW on JancisRobinson.com, among the highest ever awarded to Greek wines and the highest to retsina.
