THE GRAND PRIX OF THE REVUE DU VIN DE FRANCE AWARDED TO WINEMAKER DENIS CRESPO AND THE COOP WINERY IN CAIRANNE (RHONE - FRANCE)
An old lady in her time, righted with brio.
-Or how to how to rise from the ashes and revive an entire local community
The Cave de Cairanne, founded in 1929 in the heart of the southern Rhône vineyards, (84290 Cairanne - France) is a cooperative in the true sense of the word: an association of people voluntarily united through a collective and democratic enterprise.
Founded in 1929, the Cave de Cairanne was placed in receivership on 21 February 2014. To get this old lady up and running again, the winery hired Denis Crespo, the new winemaker, in 2015.
With his intimate knowledge of vines and wine, he succeeded in convincing the cooperative members that only quality pays, by getting them more involved in wine production. The grapes are harvested when ripe, and the work in the vineyards is done on a plot-by-plot basis. In the cellar, he has brought about a revolution by working the wines with light sulphites, including a few cuvées labelled as sulphur-free to improve the quality of the tannins.
This collective work, with its relevant results and new distribution networks, led to the merger with the Cooperative de Ste Cécile in 2021.
Today, the Cave has 122 winegrowers and 1200 hectares of vines.
The team works with passion to always produce the best possible cuvées. Year after year, in strict compliance with the rules laid down by the PDO, Denis CRESPO and his cellar workers continue to perfect the subtle art of blending wines.
The different wines produced reflect the exceptional character of the region, with its harmonious blend of terroirs, microclimates and aromatic plants, as well as the desire of each winemaker to fully express their expertise.
Denis Crespo's keen sense of winemaking and passionate soul, his sensitivity and his inspiration give life to the finest expressions of the Rhone, all set with a frank intensity and pulpy fruit to reach the heights of complexity.
