TORPEZ - Wines with Love From Saint-Tropez TORPEZ in Saint-Tropez, is a unique and distinctive brand identity in the heart of Saint-Tropez. These terroir wines from the Côtes De Provence PDO are available in white, red and rosé and truly showcase this Garden of Vines and the biodiversity of the vineyard landscape. The newly-designed engraved bottle helps make the TORPEZ brand even more visible and distinctive. The Saint-Tropez terroir sits atop one of the oldest mountain ranges in France, consisting of crystalline rocks and granite, also known as “migmatitic gneisses”, which lend the wines their richness and balance. Five generations of passionate winegrowers have successively gone above and beyond to cultivate 180 hectares of vines. The Saint-Tropez vineyards are currently home to over 130 estate owners and winegrowers with a dozen different nationalities, lending the TORPEZ brand an international dimension. Our winegrowers and oenologists ensure utmost care and precision are taken to produce TORPEZ wines. TORPEZ is the narrative of an identity, a land imbued with culture, and a token of loyalty to the history of our village and a remarkable figure who gave the current town of Saint-Tropez its name. THE HISTORIC WINERY OF SAINT-TROPEZ Saint-Tropez is a legendary village located on the Côte d’Azur in Provence, synonymous with luxury and fame. TORPEZ wines are the unique reflection of this dreamlike landscape, which embodies all the magic that Saint-Tropez has to offer: the blend of old world charm, ancient vineyards and small vine plots, breathtaking landscapes and modern, state-of-the-art facilities. This strip of land in the South of France was home to the first French vineyards 2,600 years ago (with a Roman villa near Place des Lices, on the site of the old winery) and still produces rosé, the first wine in history, to this day. Provence is thus the unrivalled world leader in rosé production, with Saint-Tropez standing as one of the key players thanks to its unique terroir of migmatitic gneisses. While the original winery dates back to 1908, a brand-new “experimental winery” was founded in 2019. Established by a small group of winegrowers, is one of the oldest winery still in operation in the Var, Provence. The Saint-Tropez winery and its vineyards are living testimonies to the history of Saint-Tropez, which was nothing but a village of farmers and fishermen in the early 20th century. Today, thanks to our brand-new Torpez signature brand, we aim not only to showcase our heritage but also to commit to a new spirit of excellence. The site of production, sales, tasting and wine tourism, the “TORPEZ à Saint-Tropez” brand is actively developing valuable expertise and state-of-the-art winemaking methods to meet the growing demands of the Côtes de Provence PDO. In addition to this brand-new showcase, and in close collaboration with the Saint-Tropez town hall, the Saint-Tropez winery also owns the KIOSQUE wine stand on Place Blanqui. Ideally located opposite the Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma, this sales outlet is open throughout the summer season. TORPEZ à Saint-Tropez’s reputation goes beyond the village of light. While firmly rooted in France, the brand is also exported to 25 countries. TORPEZ A SAINT-TROPEZ: an acclaimed identity San Torpé in PISA, Saint-Tropez in Provence: according to legend, almost 2,000 years ago, a Roman officer from Pisa known locally as either Torpé or Torpez became San Torpé di Pisa. His body was set adrift in a small open boat on the Arno River in Tuscany and the tiny craft was cast upon the shores of Saint-Tropez. This is how San Torpé from Pisa became known as Saint-Tropez in Provence. The Bravade festival pays tribute to Torpez, the patron saint and protector Each year on 16, 17 and 18 May, the residents of St Tropez pay homage to Torpez, patron saint and protector of the village, during the extraordinary “BRAVADE” festival, a tradition which has survived over 460 years. “The Bravade is a tradition based on the spirit of freedom in Saint-Tropez and is the communion of an entire population whose ancient and modern history is the embodiment of heroism and loyalty preserved until this day.” Saint-Tropez – the breeding ground for a wealth of painters, artists & writers In the late 19th century, the painter Paul Signac visited and later settled in Saint-Tropez. He was fascinated by the village's extraordinary light, which he would try to depict in his paintings throughout his lifetime. Other artists such as Matisse, Picabia, Théo Van Rysselberghe and Picasso followed in his footsteps and travelled to Saint-Tropez to depict this dreamlike landscape in their artworks. Saint-Tropez also became the muse for writers including Colette, Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Françoise Sagan, etc. A decade later, in the 1970s, the village was a popular meeting place for film stars such as Brigitte Bardot, alongside other celebrities and jet-setters. In 2014, in a bid to reconnect with its original history and continue to showcase the local terroir, the Saint-Tropez winery decided to name all its cuvées after Torpez, the Patron Saint of the village and its sailors. This emblematic figure and Saint-Tropez’s strong roots were at the forefront of the brand’s much-anticipated relaunch, led by winegrowers and estate owners. All wines produced by the winery and partner estates now bear the Patron Saint’s jewel-encrusted crown, which stands as a symbol of unity and bringing together people who are proud to showcase their homeland and fly the colours of the (red and white) Saint-Tropez flag. A TERROIR OF WINES AND GARDENS OF VINES Côtes de Provence A vast terroir stretching between the Mediterranean Sea and the “Massif de Maures” mountains. This 27,000-hectare vineyard produces around 170 million bottles each year. The Saint-Tropez vineyards boast a distinctive terroir, comprising crystalline rocks and a unique blend of migmatitic gneisses and decomposed granite. An island-like territory TORPEZ à Saint-Tropez wines benefit from a unique geographical location, between the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the Massif des Maures mountains. Here, the bedrock is one of the most metamorphic of its kind along the coast. Over 500 million years ago, the rise of magma and the explosion of lava and ash on the surface resulted in the formation of granite and mica-schist rocks. These crystalline rocks account for the minerality and balance of Torpez wines. Meanwhile, the hot, dry Mediterranean climate is moderated by Mediterranean Sea breezes. A garden of vines home to a patchwork of vine plots The landscapes beyond the Saint-Tropez village and port are truly spectacular. The surrounding hills rise majestically from the sea, and are brimming with fields, vineyards and olive groves… Almost 180 hectares of vines are spread over nearly 500 separate plots in the village of Saint-Tropez, reminiscent of a “garden of vines”. These small plots of vines are surrounded by umbrella pines, olive trees, almond trees and fig trees, among others, creating a natural haven of discovery. An outstanding natural landscape The many small plots of vines are bordered by trees and woodland, with the gulf of Saint-Tropez in the distance, offering a diverse patchwork of remarkable landscapes. Located atop a more or less hilly terrain, these natural areas are the ideal hideout for a wealth of flora and fauna. Certain sites, such as La Plage des Salins and Château de la Moutte, are protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral coastal protection agency. Signature TORPEZ wines epitomise the richness and diversity of this natural landscape. Grapes hand-picked in the cool of the morning In this “garden of vines”, the grapes are handpicked in 250-300 kg cases at peak ripeness to preserve their freshness and wholeness, and later transported to the winery, located at 111 Route des Plages. These cases are tracked and stored in a cold room for one to several days. This helps create homogeneous batches, sorted by grape variety and plot, with similar terroirs, soils/subsoils, water supplies and microclimates. Yields are naturally limited to 30-35 hL/ha (4-4.5 t/ha) due to the shallow, stony soils and crystalline rock subsoils. Patience and precision winemaking TORPEZ wines are quintessentially elegant, generous, and well-balanced, while reflecting the minerality and salinity of Saint-Tropez’s beautiful, diverse and natural landscape, which produces this unique terroir. Selected juices obtained from pressing undergo several weeks of cold settling followed by slow, gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The rosés and white wines are then aged on fine lees until bottling, with regular “bâtonnage” (stirring), the duration of which is determined by TORPEZ’s oenologists via tastings. Stirring helps “nourish” the rosés and white wines, resulting in good complexity and ageing potential, as well as long-lasting flavours. The black grapes are macerated for several weeks using very gentle extraction without pumps - instead, rack and return is performed using carbon dioxide. During devatting, the red wines are aged in 30 or 50 hL vats and 400 L barrels of different origins and toasts. The wines are aged with patience and precision for at least 12 to 24 months, or even longer, depending on their ageing potential. TORPEZ WINE COLLECTIONS Thanks to rich and varied Saint-Tropez terroirs, TORPEZ à Saint-Tropez offers a diverse selection of wines. The TORPEZ à Saint-Tropez wine collection combines two key factors: the Chevalier Torpez crown displayed on all cuvées acts as a seal of quality and an organoleptic signature combining authenticity, freshness, minerality and generosity.
