JUSTINO’S, MADEIRA WINES, S.A. HISTORY The company was established in 1926 by António Justino Henriques de Freitas under the name Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda, although in the form of a family business it had already been established on the Island of Madeira since 1870, making it one of the oldest wine producing and exporting companies in Madeira. António Justino Henriques de Freitas married Maria Matilde Henrique’s daughter of Dr Francisco Eduardo Henriques (1848 - 1912) and Carolina Matilde Henriques (1836 - 1901). Maria Matilde Henriques’ father was a well-known figure at that time. Graduated in medicine, he held, between 1887 and 1889, the position of Mayor of Câmara de Lobos. He was also a Procurator to the General Council and a member of the Central Market for Agricultural Products Delegation. Carolina Matilde Henriques, Justino Henrique’s mother-in-law, was João Joaquim Gonçalves Henriques’ cousin, born in the parish of Câmara de Lobos, an important vineyard owner and wine producer. As a result, she was cousin of the brothers Francisco Eduardo Henriques and João Joaquim Henriques who founded the company Henriques & Henriques in 1912 although, in the form of a family business, it had been established on the Island of Madeira since 1850. The family of António Justino Henriques de Freitas from an early age produced grapes on their properties and consequently wines that were basically supplied to others exporting Madeira wine companies. His union with Maria Matilde Henriques, also coming from a family of large vineyard owners and wine producers, led to the official creation of the company Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda. Wines like Rare Sercial 1806, 1851 and 1879; Sercial Solera 1830; Sercial 1890; Verdelho Solera 1784; Rare Boal 1836 and 1888; Boal Solera 1888 and 1907; Rare Malmsey 1789, 1844 and 1889; Malmsey Solera 1880 and 1900; Malmsey 1880, 1890 and 1919; Rare Rainwater 1822, 1862 and 1872; and Moscatel 1950 from its collection and from its properties are proof of the family's long relationship with wine production. António Justino Henriques de Freitas interests were not just about family business. In 1904 together with the couple Bettencourt da Câmara (António Bettencourt da Câmara and Joana Sultana Abudarham) took over the management and administration of the firm Viúva Abudarham & Filhos known producers of Madeira wine at the time. Although this company ceased activity a long time ago, after being included in the Madeira Wine Association, it is still possible today to find wines produced by this company. In February 1908, he joined the couple António Bettencourt da Câmara and Max Abecassis (married to Mary Annette Amzalak Abudarham) constituting the company Henriques & Câmara & C.º Ld.ª with headquarters at Rua dos Ferreiros, 115, Funchal. In 1913, this company held a stake in the Madeira Wine Association (MWA). Ricardo Justino Henriques de Freitas (1896 - 1937) and António Justino Henriques de Freitas Júnior were born from the union of António Justino Henriques de Freitas with Maria Matilde Henrique. They were connected to the wine business, either through the family company or through participations in other companies in the wine sector. On 28th June 1919 Ricardo Justino Henriques de Freitas together with John Frotingham Welsh and António Bettencourt da Câmara formed the company Sociedade de Bordados da Madeira, Lda., thus entering another branch of business: embroidery - other product very well-known from Madeira Island for its quality and uniqueness. In 1925, Ricardo Justino Henriques de Freitas and António Justino Henriques de Freitas Júnior decided to sell their share in Madeira Wine Association through the firm Henriques & Câmara & C.º Ld.ª. MWA, whose main objectives were the promotion of Madeira wine in international markets and the improvement of efficiency and quality in production, was renamed MWC in 1981. With the premature death of Ricardo Justino Henriques de Freitas at the age of 41, it was António Justino Henriques de Freitas Júnior who came to control the family business related to Madeira wine production. In the 1930s, Justino Henriques Filhos, Lda's trade was based mainly on exports to Brazil. When facing financial difficulties in the 1940's and 1950's they decided to develop the North American market (United States and Canada and in which they achieved some success). Of the four sons of António Justino Henriques de Freitas Júnior who was most involved in the business was his eldest son Luís Justino Portugal da Silveira Henrique de Freitas, born in 1929 and died in 1977 in the tragic plane crash at Madeira airport. However, the Henriques Family's departure from the wine business occurred in the early 1950s. With a not very profitable business, given the circumstances of the time, and with the dividends to be distributed by several descendants, the Henriques de Freitas family decided to sell the company to a Group of Portuguese companies with non-exclusive interest in the wine sector. In 1953 the company changed its name to Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda., continuing its activity in Rua do Carmo, Funchal, where the offices were located and where it was also stored wines aging in barrels and wooden vats. The winemaking and bottling operations were carried out in Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo very close to Rua do Carmo. In 1954 Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda and Companhia Vinícola da Madeira, Lda (CVM) were managed by the same administration until Companhia Vinícola da Madeira, Lda. ceased to operate. As a result of this association, part of the CVM employees moved to Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda. Some wines from this important company, once a leader in the Madeira wine production and export market, later became part of Justino's Henriques stock. Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda. included until 1955 other wine companies such as A. de Freitas (Vinhos) Lda.; C. R. Gonçalves (Vinhos) Lda.; Companhia Regional de Exportação de Vinhos da Madeira Lda.; J. Monteiro (Vinhos) Lda.; and União Vinícola (Funchal) Lda. The Malmsey 1870, Boal 1860 and 1910 wines produced by Companhia Regional de Exportação de Vinhos da Madeira Lda. as well as the Verdelho 1850 and Terrantez 1975 produced by Companhia Vinícola da Madeira, the latter wine considered to be one of the best Madeira wines ever. In 1981, Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda was acquired by Sigfredo da Costa Campos, born in the south of Portugal, an extrovert of considerable energy and determination, with a wide range of sporting interests. Colonel of the Portuguese air force during the colonial war in Angola, green beret (army special forces), commanded a regiment of paratroopers that was prepared for the high command. But he felt his fate was in another direction and decided to abandon his military career, then entering the wine trade almost by accident. Sigfredo da Costa Campos decided that he should expand the company and almost immediately began to cultivate export markets in Europe, the United States and Japan. Having achieved this goal with considerable success, in 1993 Sigfredo da Costa Campos felt that it had reached the point where, to develop the company, expand its markets, modernize its facilities and invest in new production technologies, an injection of capital was necessary. To achieve this without undue financial risk, Costa Campos sought an alliance with a large import and distribution group that acquired wines on the Island from several producers. In 1993 he joined one of the largest French production and distribution groups of spirits and liqueur wines - C.O.F.E.P also known as La Martiniquaise. The history of this Group is a true success story that began in France with Mr. Jean Cayard who launched his wine and spirits business in 1934. It is a story of business passion, of a modern and dynamic company that has grown constantly in France and has been writing its beautiful history internationally for some years now. Today La Martiniquaise is managed by Mr. Jean-Pierre Cayard who joined the company in 1970 and made it the second largest French group, with an international portfolio, and with more than 24 production sites and 27 subsidiaries around the world. Sustained growth made it necessary for Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda to move from the centre of Funchal. The difficulties of operating in old and scattered buildings, with increasingly outdated facilities and exacerbated by the congestion of the increasingly busy city, provided the transfer to much more functional premises where the entire operation was placed under a single roof, substantially reducing production costs. In 1994, with the aim of improving its working conditions, especially the winemaking, production and ageing of Madeira wine, the company built a new winery, located in the Parque Industrial da Cancela, in the municipality of Santa Cruz located north of Caniço and east of Funchal. These new spacious, modern and functional facilities were equipped to combine traditional methods with the most advanced technology used in the sector. Thus, the company flourished and, with La Martiniquaise behind the success, investments and modernization have been possible almost continuously since the beginning of the XXI century. This has resulted in the progressive refurbishment and modernization of the initial building, the construction and acquisition of new buildings and the acquisition of technically sophisticated equipment for the continuous improvement of wines. After the death in 2008 of Colonel Sigfredo da Costa Campos his family, with no interest in continuing with the company, which owned 30% of the shares, decided to sell their position to the French company La Martiniquaise. The company was renamed Justino's, Madeira Wines, S.A. and Juan Teixeira, who joined the company in 2000, was appointed in 2009 as General Director while still in charge of the Enology Department. Throughout its history Justino's Madeira has gradually conquered and confirmed its presence, all over the world, with special emphasis on France, Germany, England, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Benelux, Spain and Scandinavia, as well as the USA, Canada, South Korea, China, Brazil and Japan. Over time the renowned quality of its wines combined with a sustained increase in stocks has made Justino's, Madeira Wines, S.A. the leader in the Madeira wine production and export market. The importance of Justino's Madeira for the Madeira wine trade is unquestionable. Acquiring grapes from over 800 winegrowers, spread throughout the island, contributes to the livelihood of a large number of families. With a storage capacity of over 8M liters, Justino's Madeira Wines, S.A., currently has one of the largest stocks of wines. Of this capacity, 2.1M liters are stored in French and American oak wood, distributed over more than 4.000 units of wood (barrels, casks and vats) and that guarantees the production of high quality wines and meet the demands of the most demanding and selective markets. Among the main brands marketed are Justino's Madeira, Colombo Madeira, East India Madeira, Fanal, Gloria Mundi and Izidro Madeira.
