Icario was a farmer from Athens who met and welcomed the God Dionysus. In return Dionysus taught Icario the art of growing grapes and fermenting wine in barrels. He also gave him the task of introducing the culture of wine among mankind.  As Icario did, today the team of Icario winery aims to spread all over the world the history of our noble wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It is a long culture which started in the 7th century. Since 2015 Icario winery has been a part of the Dr. Helmut Rothenberger Holding, sharing with it the values of authenticity, quality, passion, love for art and architecture as well as respect for the environment, nature and people. In an amphitheatre of vineyards named “Pieve Delle Grazie”, blessed by a unique microclimate, at the highest altitudes in Montepulciano, we grow our grapes by only natural and organic methods. Together with winemaker Dr.  Franco Bernabei, “the patron of Sangiovese”, we aim to create wines that represent the unique character of our terroir, the harmony of Sangiovese in all its expressions, the art of precision viticulture and the enormous dedication of the Icario people.
