Deeply attached and committed to the Languedoc and the Roussillon terroirs, Gérard Bertrand owns 16 Châteaux and wine-growing estates. Convinced that a viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to make great wines that reflect all the nuances of their terroir, Gérard Bertrand made the choice to adopt biodynamic practices in the vineyard early-on and is today a worldwide reference in biodynamics. Known for his great talent for blending as well as for his audacity and creativity, he and his teams strive for promoting the South of France wines throughout the world. A TALE OF FAMILY PASSION Two generations precede Gérard Bertrand... And a fourth generation is on the way. Gérard Bertrand learnt to work on the vineyard with his father, at the Château de Villemajou on the historical terroir of Corbières. From the age of 10, his father Georges Bertrand taught him his vision: the virtues of hard work, of paying attention to the thousand and one details and the pride of his origins. Gérard has looked for excellence ever since. CHÂTEAUX AND ESTATES From high altitude vineyards nearby the Pyrenees to the volcanic soils of Terrasses du Larzac, through the coastal vineyard overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Gérard Bertrand Châteaux and Estates extend over 880 hectares, farmed with biodynamic practices. Witnesses to the unique diversity of grape varieties and terroirs, these exceptional vineyards are located on the most beautiful crus of the South of France: Corbières-Boutenac, Terrasses du Larzac, Minervois La Livinière, La Clape, Limoux, Cabrières ... to mention but a few. THE BIODYNAMICS PRACTICES The conversion of the estates to biodynamic agriculture began in 2002 on the Domaine de Cigalus. Beyond the farmer approach, Gérard Bertrand is convinced that nature and biodiversity deserve to be cultivated with caution and care. From a simple experiment on 5 hectares, Gérard Bertrand noticed the benefits of biodynamics on the ecosystem and therefore decided to convert the entire vineyard of Cigalus to this method the following year. Convinced that it is the best way to bring wines to the highest level of excellence, Gérard Bertrand knew that he would convert all his estates to biodynamics. From then on, he aimed to acquire a total mastery of this practice and convert his teams and all his vineyards. 20 years later, the promise is fulfilled since all 16 estates are now grown in biodynamics.
