Italy
Our wines from Brda, Slovenia, are only 3 km from the Italian border and 7 km from Gorizia or 1h10 from Venice in the heart of the Contea. We are delighted to have received the Decanter Bronze Medal for our first vintage with 87 points for our Erigone Cuvée Rosé and 90 points from Robert Parker for Erigone Anne (Friulano) Cerou Superiore I cru Classification with our first vintage 2019, and then the three glasses Gambero Rosso for Sotto la Chiesa, the crown of ViniBuoni d'Italia and 16,5 with Jancis Robinson!
On my family side (I am a partner of Domaine Leflaive and the nephew of Anne Claude Leflaive de Clau de Nell), we have a long wine-growing tradition in Burgundy, particularly in white wine, I looked for a place with a fantastic terroir capable of produce wines for keeping. I found it in Brda with its long wine tradition, it is the wine of the Austrian court and of Empress Maria Theresa who made the first classification of wines in 1787 well before Bordeaux in 1855. This classification has IX classes of Cru, the property has 140 ha of vines and all our Cru are classified from I to V according to the Classification, I cru being the best classification.
None of this would be possible if this exceptional terroir did not take root in the Ponca, this clay-limestone schist rock which, like a mille-feuille, is full of minerals, the result of the compression of the Venice lagoon during the erection from the Julian Alps which are only 30 km away. The limestone from the shells gives the softness and butteriness so appreciated for white wines and chardonnay in particular.
The other surprise is that thanks to the marriage of Count Teodoro La Tour en Voivre with a Friulian noblewoman from Gorizia Elvina Ritter de Zahony in 1868, he brought from Bordeaux Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet for his winery. We can say that these are traditional grape varieties of the County of Gorizia alongside Malvasia and Friulano ex Tocai than many places in France.
Our goal, with my Slovenian partner Alis Marinic, is to produce elegant and persistent wines as we did in Puligny Montrachet, we cultivate our vineyard respecting tradition in a natural way, this means that we do not use any inputs. chemical, we work the land and let the herbs grow on the vines in summer to maintain humidity in the vineyard. We already follow Steiner's ideas and philosophy with the Maria Thun moon calendar.
Our wines have a low sulfite content of less than 40. Our goal is to be biodynamic certified with Demeter, we are in the process of awaiting organic certification. In our region, we have a lot of wind called bora (we are between the Julian Alps at 30 km and the sea of Trieste at 40 km), which is very favorable and therefore very few diseases.
Our Oenologist is Anthony Colas who follows the wines of the great Burgundian estates, and shares our philosophy according to which wine is made in the vineyard. It helps us choose the right time for the “Harvest”, in order to harvest beautiful grapes, everything else follows the wine with the minimum of action to maintain its minerality and freshness.
The idea is to obtain a structured terroir wine, elegant and persistent on the palate, capable of creating a vibration, an emotion. A wine that you still want to drink after the first glass!
