Lying on the border between the two Provinces of Brescia and Verona, the Lugana denomination stretches along the plain of morainic origin to the south of Lake Garda, within the communes of Sirmione, Pozzolengo, Desenzano and Lonato (in Lombardy) and Peschiera del Garda in the Veneto.
The “Lugana” Controlled Denomination of Origin, instituted in 1967, was the first to be awarded this status in Lombardy, as well as one of the very first in Italy as a whole. In order to promote and protect it, the Consortium for the Safeguarding of Lugana was formed, an institute for supervision, defence and promotion that deals above all with protecting and highlighting the qualities of the denomination and its wine.
Its activities are focused with equal energy in two directions: towards the public at large and, within the D.O.C. itself, towards the producers themselves. In the former case, the Consortium is constantly busy communicating and promoting the Lugana brand by participating in the most important fairs in Italy and abroad, as well as organizing events aimed at making the image and the quality of Lugana better known by the general public and wine trade professionals alike.
The name would appear to derive from the early-mediaeval word “lucus” (“a wood”): this zone was in fact covered in the past by the Selva Lucana, a dense, marshy forest Today it is an area that is characterized by very particular soil, made up predominantly of white clays and limestone, which are difficult to till but capable of giving the grapes cultivated here extraordinary elegance and tanginess.
For this reason, the zone has been planted with vines since Roman times: here a particular local variety of Trebbiano, called “Turbiana”, has always been grown; it benefits from the excellent temperate microclimate of the lake and also from the particular clayey soils. The wine produced here therefore displays a range of aromas that recall white flowers and ripe citrus fruits, as well as the structure and longevity that make it one of the country’s most successful white wines, both in Italy and abroad.

Le Morette is a family run winery founded in 1960 and located in Peschiera del Garda (Italy), in the thin belt that divides the southern bank of Garda Lake and the Frassino Lake, an important naturalistic site and jewel of biodiversity recognized among the European Unionand listed in the UNESCO heritage sites.
Winery and vineyards are in the heart of the Lugana DOC area: the family runs about 50 hectares in Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda mostly dedicated to premium Lugana, the most representative white wine. Le Morette is also historically present with about 6 hectares in Lazise, producing Chiaretto di Bardolino DOC, one of the most interesting Italian rosè and some full-bodied red wines made with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Corvina grapes.
Now the third generation is on board represented by Fabio & Paolo Zenato, who are approaching the family business with the same philosophy their father Valerio used to teach them: to keep the maximum respect of the environment, applying sustainability principles in the vineyard and in the winery as well. The environmental consciousness starts in the vineyard considering that the Company is one of the very first vine-nurseries in Italy mostly devoted to indigenous grape varieties. In the vineyard sustainability is applied using organic fertilizers, water saving irrigation, avoiding any chemical herbicide, advocating the vineyard’s natural biodiversity. Le Morette is eco-friendly in the cellar too, providing a new facility concluded a few years ago, with new cutting-edge green technologies based on renewable energy.
The Company name expresses this green-soul as well: “le morette” is in fact the most popular mallard which populates Frassino Lake Bank. Another choice to emphasize the bond with the territory and the deep knowledge of all the natural factors which determine its uniqueness.
