Co-exhibitor of LA RIOJA GOBIERNO
Altanza was founded in 1998 by a group of friends which shared the dream of producing classic-timeless Riojas with a modern twist. They built a Estate-of-the-Art winery from scratch, in the heart of Rioja Alta, Fuenmayor and they also bought old vineyards and some land to plant its own vineyards.
The essence of the wines, rests on three main pillars:
Tempranillo as the backbone of all red wines which are made 100% with this variety. A grape variety which is elegant, velvety, versatile and with a great aging potential in both, into oak barrels and into the bottle.
Own vineyards as 70% to 75% of the wines are made with own grapes, which is rare in medium-size winery in this region as they must buy grapes to produce their wines. This is the key to quality consistency throughout the time. Also to obtain wines with own character and personality. 162 ha. in total (Tempranillo and Sauvignon Blanc)
French Oak devotion, as 98% of the barrels have this origin. An oak type that will enhance the fruity and elegant profile of the Tempranillo wines and will respect the characteristics of the wine that comes from the terroir (around 7500 barrels)
Some other important facts would be:
The use of own yeast for fermentation to keep a unique personality in its wines.
The strong focus on aged wines, as the youngest red wine is aged for 6 months in oak and there are 4 Altanza Reserva in total.
Altanza being one of the top and bigger producers of Sauvignon Blanc in DOCa Rioja.
The pioneering soul that took Altanza down to the south of Spain to establish a boutique winery in Jerez de la Frontera to age its own collection of old sherries, Vermuts and a Brandy Solera Gran Reserva.
